#InternLife: My Summer with Syntax

My name is Alexandra Schella. I am an Ottawa-area high school student, and for the month of July, I worked as an intern for Syntax Strategic. I started my internship feeling a bit uncertain because I had never worked for a communications company before. In fact, I had never worked in an office! However, my concerns quickly dissipated from my very first moments on the job.

Working at Syntax this past month proved to be an exciting and busy time, with new tasks and challenges every day. In fact, one of my favorite parts of this experience has been the heavy workload. I am an individual who thrives on having lots of things to do, and my colleagues at Syntax made sure there was never a dull moment.

The company has a huge network of clients in a lot of different fields – government, associations, not-for-profits, etc. Needless to say, there was always something happening, even in the middle of summer.

I helped the team by writing blogs, reviewing important documents, providing English-to-French translation for clients, organizing files or digital folders, and joining team calls. All of these tasks made me feel like a real, trusted part of Team Syntax.

My colleagues are amazing people, and they have treated me with kindness, patience, and trust. They also treated me as though I was an adult capable of making responsible decisions, which I really appreciated. Sometimes, as a teenager, adults expect that I am unable to perform and make decisions as they would, and I find myself having to prove that this is not the case. At Syntax, this was never an issue. The trust of my colleagues gave me confidence and motivated me to be as productive as possible.

My time at Syntax improved my time management and efficiency skills, but it also had another big personal benefit. It showed me that there are more career options available to me than I had previously thought. My goal has always been to work in meteorology and professional storm chasing, I've written a blog on that here if you want to learn more, but now I know that there are other fields which might interest me, and where I might make an impact.

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a dynamic, supportive, and inspiring group of people and was proud to spend part of my summer as a member of #TeamSyntax!
